Don’t give sturgeon endangered species status. That’s the plea from state Representative Cam Cavitt of Cheboygan as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services is considering making that move.

There’s 21 states that have sturgeon populations, but Michigan and Wisconsin have a very robust program, and we’ve been working on rehabilitation and recovery for 20 years,” Cavitt said. “Ours are not in decline. Actually, there’s an uptick in sturgeon populations.”

Cavitt suggests other states adopt the programs Michigan has to save the sturgeon.

Cavitt also recommends people call their representatives to stop this move.
