Decades ago, Congress approved the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. At the time, it committed to funding 40% of special education in classrooms, but consistently have come up short.
K-12 Alliance Director Bob McCann is calling for a hearing and passage of the IDEA Full Funding Act.
“And what it would do is set targets over the next 10 years to get the federal government to live up to its obligation and increase their funding level up to that 40% mark in 10 years. 10 years. We’re not asking for overnight fixes here.”
In Michigan, that accounts for a $630 million dollar shortfall.
McCann says if the federal government increases special education funding, a huge burden would be lifted from every district.
