Michigan’s new gun laws take effect in a week. One of them has do with safe storage. By law, guns will have to be unloaded and locked with a trigger-locking mechanism or stored in a locked storage container. Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw says gun owners can get a lock for free at any state police post.

“ Most or all guns as they’re sold automatically have a gun lock with them,” Shaw said. “So, a lot of people already have them, but if for some reason you misplaced it or you misplaced the case that you had with it, you can get yourself one at one of those posts.”

Shaw says not using a gun lock won’t just be illegal, it could also be tragic. At least four Michigan children died last year due to unsecured guns. The CDC says gun injuries are the leading cause of death among U.S. kids and teens. Other laws taking effect next week include expanded background checks and red flag laws.
