Friday was the 187th birthday of Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer drew attention to the date on social media.
“Happy birthday, Michigan,” Whitmer said. “We’re looking pretty good for 187. Our state has been the birthplace of so much innovation and culture, and it’s all thanks to you, the people who call this great place home.”
Michigan was admitted to the union on January 26, 1837 as the 26th state.
Michigan’s first governor was Steven T. Mason, a Democrat. He was initially elected as a territorial governor at just the age of 23 in 1835. He served until 1840.
