Marijuana sales meant big bucks in Michigan last year

Michigan is the nation’s leader in marijuana sales.

The monthly report released by Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency shows Michigan topped $3 billion in cannabis sales last year.

Crain’s Detroit Business reports that those pot sales top even alcohol sales in the state, but not everybody is happy with the news. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel spoke with CBS Detroit’s Michigan Matters over the weekend.

“My opinion right now is I don’t think it’s a good thing,” Hackel said. “Everybody wants to talk about it as a revenue source, and they’re forgetting about the other social issues that are going on that I find to be challenging. My former life in law enforcement, I’ve seen the challenges. I think ten or twenty years from now after all of the studies are done, then they’re going to be saying, ‘Was this really a good idea?'”

However, there’s no doubt pot sales in Michigan are big money. Total sales work out to just over $300 per person in the state of Michigan.
