Benton Harbor residents asked for thoughts on Jean Klock Park improvements

Benton Harbor residents are being asked for their thoughts on how Jean Klock Park could be improved.

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission’s Marcy Hamilton tells us a grant opportunity has arisen for the attraction.

“There’s an opportunity right now where Benton Harbor can apply for up to $1 million to improve a park,” Hamilton said. “It’s called the DNR SPARK program. [ The city was ] awarded that funding in round one for Hall Park, and so this time the city is planning to apply for Jean Klock Park.”

Hamilton says the application period for this new round of SPARK grants opened up last month, and everyone’s invited to a workshop Wednesday, January 24 at the Benton Harbor Library to offer their thoughts.

“We’ve been collecting feedback for a couple of months now through surveys and things, so this is kind of our last big event to get feedback from the community.”

Hamilton says residents are being asked what they would like out of the park’s playground, restroom facilities, and concessions area.

Anyone can stop by the library from 3 to 5 p.m. to answer questions as the planning commission and city prepare a SPARK grant application. It’s due by January 31, and the state could announce a decision in March.

There’s also an online survey anyone can complete. You can find it right here.
