It’s a new era for General Motors workers following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those workers who have been working remote went back to the office on Monday for at least three days a week, just in time for the new surge in respiratory illnesses that are slowing down hospitals.

Auto Analyst John McElroy says the new hybrid approach most likely won’t completely fill the empty office space downtown.

“This is a problem all across the country,” McElroy said. “There’s so much office space in downtown areas that are vacant. Last time I was in the Ren Cen, on a Friday night, there wasn’t much of anything going on there, whereas before the pandemic, the place was hopping.”

McElroy says the carmakers want workers back because it generates better comradery and new employees understand the system better. He thinks hybrid work is here to stay.
