South Haven to welcome Queen’ Cup boat race this summer

Returning to South Haven this year will be the Queen’s Cup boat race.

The event always starts in Milwaukee, featuring more than 100 sailboats that race to different locations on the west coast of Michigan each summer. The South Haven City Council this week approved its special event application with Assistant City Manager Griffin Graham saying the Queen’s Cup has run to South Haven at least three times in past years.

“This is an event that’s been successfully hosted in town several times,” Graham said. “The application being brought before you is very consistent with those successful events. The one thing I do want to highlight that is of note is not only is council being asked to approve this special event application, but also a proposed license agreement for the exclusive use of the south municipal marina during the event.”

The South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee hosts the race, and it’s teaming up this year with the South Haven Yacht Club to bring it into the community.

“The yacht club does pay a license fee to offset the costs of staffing and not renting boats and  slips out for that weekend. So, that’s another piece included in this that I guess is not normal to many of our special events, but it is consistent with how we’ve successfully hosted this event in the past.”

The Queen’s Cup will leave Milwaukee on June 28 and finish in South Haven on June 29.

The Queen’s Cup also ran to South Haven in 2012, 2015, and 2017.
