The Berrien Community Foundation is promoting its scholarships by putting a spotlight on one of them to show how an individual can make a difference by helping the younger generation.

The BCF says the Rodney Weir Marching Band Scholarship was first awarded in 2017. It was created by Dr. Rodney Weir, a Coloma High School graduate and drum major of the University of Michigan Marching Band.

Weir led the band in the 1992 Rose Bowl Game and his time in band inspired him to start the scholarship at the BCF.

While Weir is reflecting on his time at the Rose Bowl, BCF scholarship recipient Sophia Bomar of Bridgman is looking forward to her own time marching with the Michigan Marching Band in this year’s events in California.

While in high school, Bomar was a member of the BCF’s youth advisory committee. She went on to receive the Carole A. Oehlhaffen Youth in Philanthropy Scholarship and is using it to support her education at the University of Michigan, where she is a member of the marching band. She says she’s most excited about marching in the Rose Parade, adding before she is “so grateful to have received the support from BCF, not just the scholarship but from everyone at BCF and Ms. Oehlhaffen.”
