The Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce is out with a new report gauging progress in the state of Michigan’s “Sixty by 30” initiative. That’s a goal of 60% of state residents having achieved a skills certificate or college degree by the year 2030.

Sandy Baruah, the president of the Detroit Ragional Chamber of Commerce, told us why this is important.

“Why does this matter? In a knowledge economy, we need knowledge workers. This trend is only going to continue. In fact, experts estimate that 70% of jobs by 2027 are going to require some sort of post-secondary work. Compare that to the 53% where we are today and it’s simply not good enough.”

The chamber commissioned the report.

Baruah says of concern in it is that the percentage of students not enrolling in post-secondary education immediately after high school continues to increase.
