MI Lottery warns about lottery scams

With the excitement of the holidays, it’s also a good idea to be wary of lottery scams. The Michigan Lottery’s Jake Harris says there are those who would take advantage.

“If you do have a winning ticket, you need to keep it safe,” Harris said. “That means signing the back of your ticket, getting your name on it. And then put it in a safe and secure place. That means not sharing it — even though it’s exciting — not sharing it on social media, not sending a photo of it to family and friends.”

Harris says there are a couple of scams. He says one is when you get a letter, email, or call that you’ve won a big lottery prize, but have to pay a fee to collect it. He says another one is when someone contacts you claiming to be a lottery winner and says they’ll share it with you if you send them money.

Harris adds if you win a prize, you don’t have to pay anything to collect the prize.
