Student achievement in Michigan is improving slowly, but we’re still behind pre-pandemic levels. That’s the bottom line of a new report from Michigan State University.
Tara Kilbride is the interim associate director of MSU’s Education Policy Innovation Collaborative, or EPIC, which works with the state Department of Education.
“The impact the pandemic has had on students in Michigan and elsewhere is tremendous,” Kilbride said. “So, we are seeing some encouraging signs of recovery, especially in math, over the last two years. This is happening slowly, and these improvements are pretty small when compared to how big that impact was. So, it will take a while.”
Kilbride says the report found math achievement for K-8 students in Michigan has improved slightly. However, reading scores have stayed about the same since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
