Holiday shoppers are making plans for Black Friday, but Michigan leaders want them to check off the majority of their shopping list the next day. That would be Small Business Saturday.
Leaders say locally owned shops play a major role in Michigan’s economy. Brian Calley is CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan. He says the holiday shopping season makes or breaks most local shops.
“This is a really key and critical time for retail and restaurant businesses where their whole year revolves around what happens around holiday time,” Calley said. “So, it’s so important to support the local economy, support local communities.”
Calley says local shops make up 99% of the state’s businesses. He says there are more than 900,000 small businesses across Michigan.
