The Michigan House is working on legislation aimed at ending staffing shortages at fire departments.
The bill would require staffing levels to be discussed during fire union contract negotiations.
Matthew Sahr is president of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union. He spoke to us about the need for the change.
“Anytime that there’s a fire and we’re able to mitigate that as quick as possible, that saves family heirlooms, property, and more importantly, lives,” Sahr said. “So we want to make sure that we get there quick, and that’s what this bill does.”
Sahr says better staffing improves everyone’s safety. He wants all firefighters to call their state representatives on behalf of the bill.
