U of M taking part in firearm conference in Chicago

Firearm injury prevention research will be the focus of a national conference later this week in Chicago.

It’s organized by the Research Society for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms, of which the University of Michigan is a founding member.

Dr. Patrick Carter, co-director of the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at U of M, doesn’t believe there’s a “one-size-fits-all” solution.

“It’s a complicated question, and I think there isn’t a single solution to solve this problem,” Carter said. “What we need is a holistic approach that research and data can bring to bear to look at what are the drivers of the problem and what are the specific solutions that we can apply to different aspects of this problem.”

Dr. Carter says the biggest driver of firearm injuries in the U.S. is firearm suicides.
