Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor scored in the first period and Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The Jets won their third straight and improved to 6-4-0 in their last 10 visits to Detroit. Mason Appleton and Nino Niederreiter scored in the third period. Lucas Raymond scored at 3:18 of the second period for Detroit. Dylan Larkin and defenseman Moritz Seider assisted on the goal. James Reimer finished with 28 saves. The assist was Seider’s 100th point in 172 career games. He is the third-fastest Red Wings defenseman to reach 100 points behind Reed Larson (139 games) and Nicklas Lidström (160 games).

Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and the Buffalo Bills hung on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-18 on Thursday night. After a week of questions about his “low-energy” approach and Buffalo’s slow-starting offense, Allen came through for the Bills. He had been listed on the Bills’ report with a right shoulder injury and was checked in the blue medical tent in the second quarter, but remained in the game. Gabriel Davis had a career-best nine catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. Baker Mayfield tried to rally the Buccaneers late, but the game ended on a Hail Mary attempt. Tampa Bay has lost three straight.

NFL – Lions and Raiders are both looking to bounce back from bad losses on Monday night
The NFC North-leading Detroit Lions and the Las Vegas Raiders will have something in common on Monday night. Both teams are trying to bounce back from lopsided losses. Detroit’s four-game winning streak ended in Baltimore with a 32-point loss. Las Vegas had won two straight games before losing at Chicago by 18 points. The Raiders may get a boost from the return of Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been out for 1 1/2 games with a back injury.
NFL – Bears rookie Tyson Bagent could have encore performance against Chargers
Tyson Bagent generated plenty of headlines in leading the Chicago Bears to a victory in his first NFL start. The undrafted rookie gets a chance on a prime-time stage to show he is more than a one-game wonder. Bagent and the Bears travel to Southern California to face the reeling Los Angeles Chargers Sunday night. Chicago has won two of three since a 14-game losing streak while Los Angeles has dropped two straight. Bagent gets the start again with Justin Fields sidelined due to a dislocated thumb. He will face a LA defense ranked last against the pass at 310 yards per game.
NFL – Colts face another stingy defense as Saints make a rare trip to Indianapolis
Alvin Kamara and Jonathan Taylor have been two of the most successful and versatile running backs in the NFL. On Sunday, they will be on opposite sidelines for the first time when the New Orleans Saints visit Indianapolis. Both missed the first part of the season, but seem to be rounding into midseason form. The Saints are trying to snap a two-game losing streak against a foe it has beaten four straight times. The Colts also have lost two straight since quarterback Gardner Minshew replaced injured rookie Anthony Richardson as the starter.

NCAA investigators interviewed members of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff about a sign-stealing scheme on Thursday, a person familiar with the governing body’s visit told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation. The NCAA’s inquiry into Michigan’s sign-stealing operation was triggered by an outside firm’s investigation, which turned up videos of and documented plans and budgets for impermissible scouting of opponents.

Yes, the odds are stacked against Pitt, which has only won two of seven games this season and draws Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish are fresh off their bye week. But rivalry games don’t always go as expected, either.

Minnesota is aiming to maintain momentum from an emotional win over rival Iowa and keep up in the Big Ten West Division race. The Gophers host reeling Michigan State on Saturday. Minnesota is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Gophers are favored by seven points according to FanDuel Sportsbook odds. They are tied for second in the Big Ten with nine interceptions. Spartans quarterback Katin Houser will make his third career start as the entire team tries to bounce back from a 49-0 loss to second-ranked Michigan. Michigan State is 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten.

Former President George W. Bush, the former Rangers owner, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Texas plays the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series opener on Friday night. This will be Bush’s fourth World Series ceremonial first pitch but his first before an opener. Bush, 77. headed the group that bought the Rangers from Eddie Chiles in 1998 and was general partner through November 1994, when he stepped down as he prepared to become Texas governor.
