Upton: Situation with House Speaker ‘ludicrous’

Retired Congressman Fred Upton says House Republicans had better get it together now that the impasse over the election of a speaker has dragged out for more than two weeks.

He spoke on CNN Monday and said voters will not show their appreciation for this fight when they hit the polls.

“This is day 20,” Upton said. “The world’s afire. We can’t pick a speaker when we have a Republican majority, we can’t get our folks together? This is going to have a big impact on the elections next year as people are just going to walk away from the Republican party because it’s a clown car. They can’t govern. That’s not what they want. They don’t care if you have an R or a D next to your name, they want you to do that job. And right now with Israel, Ukraine, a shutdown again coming up in just a couple of weeks, nothing has happened.”

Upton said the current situation is like a clown car.

He thinks of the nine potential speakers now being considered, Tom Emmer of Minnesota is the frontrunner. However, that doesn’t mean it will be an easy road. Upton said he expects voting to take through mid-week, and that still doesn’t mean there will be a resolution.
