3,700 workers at Detroit’s three casinos are walking the picket line instead of dealing cards.

The workers walked out of MGM Grand, Motor City, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown at noon Tuesday after negotiators couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract. The main issues are pay, benefits, job workload. and mandatory overtime.

Shataya Thompson, who works at Motor City Casino and was involved in the talks, says things have been difficult since the pandemic.

“We came back with not even the same amount of people we left with,” Thompson said. “So, we lost jobs and the pandemic changed everything. It’s not just here, it was just everywhere. It changed everything, and now we’re feeling the effects and trying to catch up.”

Despite the strike, the casinos remain open. The city of Detroit and state could lose as much as $735,000 a day in tax revenue as a result of the walkout.
