The millage renewal for Lake Michigan College was headed toward approval by voters Tuesday. The 20-year continuation of an operating millage that accounts for 25% of LMC’s budget was on its way to being given a thumbs up by voters in Tuesday’s election, although the Berrien County Clerk’s office wasn’t reporting final numbers as of 1 a.m. The renewal was on its way to being passed by a large margin.
There was a primary for commissioner at large in Benton Harbor. The Berrien County Clerk’s office did not provide any results from that race by 1 a.m. City Commissioners Edward Isom and Mary Alice Adams faced challenges from Shaquille Turner, Tyrone Davis, and Emma Kinnard. Four of the five will head to the general election in November.
Elsewhere in Berrien County, Chikaming Township voters approved a road millage.
In Van Buren County’s South Haven, former South Haven Public Schools Board of Education president Annie Brown and city council member Joe Reeser moved on to the general election for mayor. Defeated was former Mayor Robert Burr. Reeser and Brown are vying to replace Mayor Scott Smith, who has opted not to seek reelection.
Also in Van Buren County, a proposal to regulate large solar farms in Decatur Township was roundly defeated.
The Berrien County Clerk’s office was reporting 50% of the results by 1 a.m. The Van Buren County Clerk’s office was reporting 100% of the results by that same time.
