Voters headed to the polls Tuesday in southwest Michigan to decide a handful of races. The big one was Lake Michigan College’s millage renewal, which passed with wide support to grant LMC a continuation of its operating millage for another 20 years. The millage has been in place since 1963.
In Benton Harbor, a primary for city commissioner at large was to whittle a field of five primary candidates down to four for two seats in November. City Commissioners Edward Isom and Mary Alice Adams will face Shaquille Turner and Emma Kinnard in the general election, as those four received the most votes. Tyrone Davis finished fifth.
In Chikaming Township, voters approved a road millage.
Turning to Van Buren County, in South Haven, former South Haven Public Schools Board of Education President Annie Brown and city council member Joe Reeser moved on to the general election for mayor. Defeated was former Mayor Robert Burr. They’re vying to replace Mayor Scott Smith, who has opted not to seek reelection.
Also in Van Buren County, a proposal to regulate large solar farms in Decatur Township was defeated.
