A Decatur woman has been arraigned on a charge of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult after prosecutors say she stole money from a family member in a residential care facility.

The Michigan Attorney General’s office says 61-year-old Laurie Laskovy served as co-guardian and conservator for a family member who began residing in a residential care facility in 2014. In that court-appointed position, Laskovy held complete control of her ward’s finances, including a bank account, until her removal from the role in 2022.

It’s alleged Laskovy began stealing funds in 2017, using the victim’s bank account to obtain cash and pay personal bills, totaling more than $100,000. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

At her arraignment in Kalamazoo on Friday, she was given a $20,000 personal recognizance bond. She’s due in court for a pre-exam conference on August 10.

The Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Division handled the case. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says, “Integrity in court-appointed guardians and conservators is paramount to safeguarding the assets and well-being of our most vulnerable residents.”
