Former Hartford Police Chief Tressa Beltran has been bound over for trial in a case involving the theft of controlled substances.

The Michigan Attorney General’s office says the 57-year-old Beltran is facing nine charges that include embezzlement, extortion, larceny, and possession of a controlled substance. She was in the 7th District Court in Paw Paw this week and was sent on to trial in the 36th Circuit Court.

While working as the city of Hartford’s police chief, the AG’s office alleges Beltran sold controlled substances, stole controlled substances, used her influence to extort others to provide her with controlled substances, illegally possessed several different types of controlled substances, and committed embezzlement.

Detectives from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case after getting several tips about Beltran’s actions. She resigned from the Hartford Police Department in January amid an investigation into missing pills from the drug disposal box at the police station.
