The Michigan Supreme Court will likely decide at least two cases in which the Whitmer administration shut down restaurants, banquet halls, and other public businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. A group of restaurants has been suing, saying the shutdowns were not effective at curbing COVID-19 rates and negatively impacted their businesses. Attorney Albert Addis commented.

“The first lawsuit we filed on behalf of all of the bars and restaurants in Macomb County sought money damages, and we still seek money damages,” Addis said. “I’m of the personal belief that whether you’re an individual or a politician, if you don’t get hit with money damages, the message doesn’t get home.”

Recently, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled the state Health and Human Services Department overstepped its authority when it issued the orders. At the time, the state said they’d appeal the decision. The Michigan Supreme Court will decide at least two cases.
