Two Michigan State Police troopers who were involved in a chase and shooting Wednesday night that took them from Niles to South Bend are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. State police say a trooper pulled over a vehicle on South Eleventh Street around 8:30 p.m. for a blown tail light. The driver, 32-year-old Joshua Ringle of South Bend, was found to have a warrant. As the trooper tried to take Ringle into custody, there was a struggle, the trooper used his taser, and Ringle sped away after pulling out a gun. The chase, now involving a second Michigan State Police trooper, went into South Bend, where Ringle crashed his vehicle into a South Bend Police Department vehicle. Ringle then fled on foot toward the St. Joseph River and shots were fired. He was found dead near the river. A female passenger in his car was not hurt or arrested. Indiana State Police are now investigating, and per MSP policy, the two troopers are on leave. An autopsy will be performed on Ringle at Western Michigan University.
