The OutCenter of Southwest Michigan is gearing up for a big weekend amid the rainbow whirlwind that is Pride Month.

PrideFest is making its return to downtown Benton Harbor this Saturday as the OutCenter celebrates its 20th Anniversary serving Southwest Michigan. The event takes place from noon to 6 p.m. at the Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park on the corner of Water Street and Main Street.

OutCenter is a nonprofit based in Benton Harbor that provides support services and resources to LGBTQ+ people, their families, and allies in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties.

“It would be so phenomenal for folks to come on out and celebrate that 20 year history of success to bring equity to Southwest Michigan and provide not only support to LGBTQ people, but to help create more understanding and affirmation of people like us,” OutCenter Executive Director Mary Jo Schnell said. “We wouldn’t be here without this community support, and I’m talking not only LGBTQ people, but all of the allies that help support this organization and who show up for Pride Fest. So come on back out, you folks. It’s going to be a fabulous, fabulous time.”

They have been hosting events nearly every day during June, but non are bigger than Pride Fest, which drew 750 people last year.

“As a Benton Harbor native, it was deeply moving to see so many people celebrating Pride together at last year’s PrideFest,” said Gerik Nasstrom, Program Director and Event Coordinator. “My favorite thing to hear from attendees was just how warm and welcoming the event felt. This year we are excited to welcome even more people, vendors, and businesses from across Southwest Michigan.”

Schnell said Pride Fest and the OutCenter is for more than just LGBTQ people and allies, it’s a community resource for everyone.

“Everybody knows somebody that’s LGBTQ,” she said. “If somebody you know comes out to you and you want to know more about this, you’re seeking guidance, we’re here for you. If somebody you know is struggling with their identity and they need support and guidance, we’re here for you.

“We’re here for you. Remember that as you go through your days and you navigate your life. And come on out this weekend and celebrate with us.”
