Stevensville area residents who miss having access to Lincoln Township Beach could soon have reason to cheer.
Lincoln Charter Township officials on Tuesday discussed a plan to revive the beach, which was closed in 2020 after high water levels eroded away the pavilion and parking lot area.
“We’ve got this wonderful beach down in Lincoln Township between just south of the chalets,” said trustee Marc Florian. “It’s been unusable and largely inaccessible for the past several years as a result of the erosion. We’re trying to change that now. We’re trying to make that a destination, make that a usable beach … and maximize the opportunity that we have with almost 400 feet of sand now between the chalets and the residential homes to the south.”
During a presentation to the township board, engineer Brandon Mieras said the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy needs to approve the project due to critical dunes on the property.
“We’ve done our best to minimize the impact,” said Mieras, adding that if approved, the park would increase parking capacity to 35 parking spots, including three that are handicap accessible.
There is no official timeline yet on when the project would begin.
Pickleball
Mieras also showed board members and the public an outline of the changes coming to Lincoln Township Park on Tuesday. He said the plan is to add two more pickleball courts, and move the beach volleyball courts to make room for more parking.
The parking lot will increase from 55 to 94 spaces, and sidewalks will also be upgraded. Mieras said that project will be ready for bidding in the next couple weeks, and construction should begin this fall.
