Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad will be in Chicago Thursday to receive the Richard M. Daley Water Equity Award from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. He told city commissioners this week the city’s efforts to improve the water system and to remove lead service lines have led to the honor.
“Benton Harbor is at the top being recognized by all of those cities,” Muhammad said. “The EPA will be there, the mayor of Chicago, and many others.”
The Richard M. Daley Water Equity Award is intended to provide disadvantaged communities help pursuing federal funds for the removal of lead lines and the building of water infrastructure. Now that it’s a recipient, Benton Harbor will get help with things like grant writing and navigating the process of applying for funding.
