A recall attempt against Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education Trustee Trenton Bowens has been rejected by the Berrien County Election Commission.
The Berrien County Clerk’s office tells us the language on the recall petition filed by Shari Szilagyi of Benton Harbor was deemed too vague by the commission at a hearing this week.
The petition said Bowens should be recalled for voting against the replacement of a boiler at Benton Harbor High School at a meeting in March.
After the commission’s vote this week, another recall petition was filed against Bowens, this time by fellow school board member Elnora Gavin. In this new petition, Gavin cites the same reason for recalling Bowens, which is voting against the boiler replacement.
Bowens was not the only trustee to vote the matter down, as a resolution to replace the boiler failed on a four to three vote.
Now that a new recall petition has been filed, another clarity hearing will be held, although it hasn’t yet been scheduled. It will likely be in mid May.
