Babe’s Lounge in Benton Harbor has new owners and a new name. Starting immediately, the historically-popular local landmark will be known as Babe’s Riverview Bar and Grill.
On Thursday, Keith Polaskey, owner of Heaven Scent Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning, formally took ownership of Babe’s from Pauline Couvelis. Keith and his wife Angela will operate the business. Babe’s was first established by James “Babe” Couvelis in 1958 on Main Street in Benton Harbor, but it eventually moved to Riverview Drive in the 1970s. The ownership transition to Polaskey has been whispered about for weeks but it is now official and already the renovations to freshen the riverside property are underway.
The business at 565 Riverview Drive is in a prime location for nearby developments underway. The bar is currently closed and as soon as the liquor license transfer is complete (expected in the next day) Babe’s will reopen.
