Michigan air quality showing improvement

Air quality data shows that Michigan is improving in some areas, but falling behind in others. Ken Fletcher, advocacy director for the American Lung Association, noted our state is tracking in the right direction.

“We saw some improvement in ozone pollution,” Fletcher said. “We saw fewer days overall where there were unhealthy days with ozone pollution, and the Metro Detroit area actually fell out of the 25 top polluted areas of the country for ozone pollution.”

However, there were also increases in short term particle pollution. Some areas, like in Allegan County, could be getting a failing grade because ozone pollution is traveling across Lake Michigan from Chicago. Fletcher says we’re getting better, but still have a long way to go when it comes to our air quality.
