Indiana man dies in I-94 crash near Bridgman; Stevensville woman uninjured

A 39-year-old Indiana man is dead after crashing into a tree in southwest Michigan on Tuesday.

According to a report from the Michigan State Police, the unnamed man from Gary attempted to pass another vehicle while traveling westbound on I-94 near mile marker 16 in Lake Township at about 5:42 p.m. As he made the pass, he struck a third vehicle from behind. His vehicle then lost control and left the roadway, colliding with a tree. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle he collided with, a 32-year-old Stevensville woman, was ununijured. Police said she was wearing a seatbelt.

The vehicle that was passed was not involved in the crash.

Alcohol or drug use do not appear to be a factor in this crash. Troopers were assisted by Bridgman Police Department, Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Chikaming Township Police Department, Lake Township Police Department, Bridgman Fire Department, and Medic One Ambulance Service.

This crash remains open pending further investigation. Traffic was impacted on I-94 for several hours at the scene for investigation and cleanup.
