Group calls for undocumented migrants to be permitted driver’s licenses

A group representing migrants is calling on Michigan lawmakers to support a bill that would allow undocumented migrants to get driver’s licenses. We the People MI southwest Michigan organizer Lupita Sanchez tells us legislation known as Drive SAFE will soon be introduced in Lansing to allow them. She says farms and other businesses that employ undocumented migrants need their workers.

“If we have this bill passed, our roads will be safer by knowing all of the drivers have gone through the process and proper training and driver tests,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez says the economy would benefit from allowing undocumented migrants to drive legally.

“They have to drive to take kids to school, they have to drive every day to work, for medical appointments, and they don’t have access to a lot of services.”

The group is hoping to get state Representative Pauline Wendzel to support the Drive SAFE bills. It’s planning a town hall for tonight in Hartford to make the call, although Wendzel’s office told us she isn’t going to be there. A representative of Wendzel says those in the U.S. legally can get a driver’s license. He said Wendzel doesn’t support an expansion of that, but would look at making it easier for those individuals who are legally present to get their temporary license.

The town hall will be at Iglesia Misionera Bethel de Hartford, 58444 62nd Street, at 6 p.m.
