Huizenga: Congress taking close look at ties with China

Congressman Bill Huizenga is looking closely at how China interacts with the United States following a House hearing on the question this week. The new House Select Committee on the strategic competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party held a prime time hearing Tuesday. Huizenga says that committee is studying a variety of issues.

“To get to the bottom of what China is exactly doing, both in major ways that we have seen [like] this Belt and Road Initiative around the world, where they’ve been purchasing seaports and they’ve been involved in infrastructure in Africa and Asia and Latin America,” Huizenga said. “A lot of it is in Latin America. Or, if it’s been the more subtle elements we’ve seen, as COVID exposed, with our supply chain.”

Huizenga says that also includes subjects like the Chinese spy balloon and even TikTok. He notes the Biden administration has banned TikTok from some federal government-owned mobile devices, and a bill was just approved this week by the House Foreign Affairs Committee to allow a ban of TikTok in general. Huizenga says he believes the social media app is enough of a threat to warrant a straight ban. The bill in consideration would give the president the authority to ban the service.
