Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reiterating the potential consequences of fake threats after swatting calls were made to schools throughout the state Tuesday. Nessel says fake or not, all threats are taken seriously.

“They are real crimes and they carry real consequences. Law enforcement has a duty to investigate these threats and pursue charges against the individuals involved.”

Nessel says there are multiple types of charges under state law. She says there are possible felony charges for posting fake social media threats, or making threatening phone calls to schools. Benton Harbor High School was one of the schools where there was a fake shooting call. Other schools that were targets were Portage Northern, Detroit Renaissance High School, Muskegon High School, Ann Arbor Huron High School and other schools in Jackson, Lansing, and Saginaw. All of the calls were hoaxes. In all, high schools in nine counties were targeted.
