Tributes to a local leader are coming in following his unexpected death.
Community leader Bob Gerbel, 88, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, his family announced.
According to Moody on the Market, Gerbel was a quiet-but-driving force of community projects and improvements for 50 years in St. Joseph. He was active in the St. Joseph Improvement Association, and was instrumental in the growth and development of the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation.
Gerbel was an enthusiastic supporter of Michigan State University, a topic which came up in several Facebook tributes posted since his passing. The Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber said the following:
Moody on the Market often heard from Gerbel, and Pat Moody took some time to write a tribute as well.
Former St. Joseph City Manager Frank Walsh said the following:
Without question, Bob loved St. Joseph. His work through the SJ Improvement Association was truly amazing. Little known fact, in 2004, Bob personally handed me a check to help kick start the St. Joseph Public Art program. The world famous St.Joseph Public Art Program would not have went forward without Bob and the Association.Bob was a real gentleman. Let us remember Bob for all he was. Generous, Kind and Empathetic.Rest in Peace, my friend.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
