The recipients of Lake Michigan College’s Spirit of MLK Spotlight awards this year are Ashley Hines, Nicholas Gunn, and the African American History and Literature Gallery.

LMC held its annual MLK Celebration and Community Breakfast on Monday. More than 450 people attended the in-person event featuring inspirational music from choirs and the announcement of the award recipients.

Ashley A. Hines is the founder and director of the Benton Harbor Community Development Corporation and works to empower the community through development projects and programming.

Gunn is an 18-year-old Berrien Springs High School graduate attending Andrews University. He is a cadet firefighter for St. Joseph Township, a board member for the Benton Harbor Arts Association, a member of Corewell Health South’s Community Advocate Committee, a co-chair of the Fresh Start Children’s Garden, and a member of both Andrews University’s Community Engagement Committee and Benton Harbor’s Master Plan Steering Committee.

The African American History and Literature Gallery seeks to develop an appreciation for the African American experience through the arts, history, and culture.

LMC says its spotlight recipients all embody the spirit and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events will continue all week as part of LMCs Martin Luther King celebrations.
