Congressman Tim Walberg has led a delegation of Michigan Republicans in sending a letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer calling on her to ban TikTok on Michigan government devices, citing security concerns posed by the Chinese Communist Party. The lawmakers also urged Whitmer to delete the TikTok account associated with her office. Walberg, the congressman soon to be representing portions of Berrien and Cass counties, says TikTok is owned by parent company ByteDance, which is headquartered and operated in Beijing, China. Given Chinese law, they are legally obligated to share information with the Chinese Communist Party. Walberg and the other Michigan Republicans signing the letter say the app can be used by the CCP to collect personal and location information, as well to promote CCP propaganda and censor content. Also signing the letter were Congressman Fred Upton and Congressman Bill Huizenga.
