A local restaurant has abruptly closed.

The Sonic Drive-In near the I-94 exit on M-139 in Benton Township has closed permanently. The restaurant opened in 2015, after the demolition of the former Bill Knapp’s and Maxton Motors.

“Our apologies but due to the recent events this location is closed,” reads a sign posted on the drive-thru window, with the word “temporarily” scribbled out. “We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your business and patience.”

Brian Cronkrite, Vice President of Trigo Hospitality, said Trigo sold their 11 Sonic Drive-In locations to SOAR Restaurant Group last December. Trigo was the developer behind the $4 million project to bring the building to Benton Township.

Cronkrite said Trigo still owns the building, which is also home to a Dunkin’ location.
