SJ city engineer: Avoid Langley, Broad during construction through mid-October

People traveling in and out of St. Joseph are being asked to avoid using Broad Street and Langley Avenue through at least mid-October as a road resurfacing and sewer project gets underway.

Starting Monday, Sept. 19, the reconstruction of sections of Broad Street and Langley Avenue will cause intermittent lane closures. The project area will stretch from Main Street to Ann Street on Broad Street, as well as from Ann Street to Pearl Street on Langley Avenue.

City Engineer Tim Zebell said the project is mostly for resurfacing, but will also include some underground sewer work.

“There’s a short section of sanitary sewer in need of replacement next to Vail Rubber near Pearl Street that will be done early on [in the project], Zebell said. “Then there’s a large storm sewer crossing in front of Public Works that will also have some rehabilitation work done on it.”

Zebell said the northbound lane of Langley and westbound lane of Broad will be closed starting Monday, and people traveling in or out of town by way of Napier should use Niles Avenue and Main Street as a detour route. He added that residents living within the construction area should not be affected too much by the projects.

“Unless there is actual physical work underway, as in milling or resurfacing … they should be able to cross over the pavement to get where they need to go,” he said. “Ann Street, for example, that intersection will be open except for very limited times when the work is going through it.”

Residents should continue to put their trash and recycling containers as close the the normal location as they can, Zebell said.

“If there is an issue where it needs to be collected and taken to a centralized point for pickup, we work with the contractor to make that happen,” said Zebell, adding that on-site inspectors from Abonmarche will be available to discuss any issues.

Zebell said he expects the project to be completed by mid to late October.
