A traffic stop in Calhoun County led to a seizure of 22 pounds of cocaine and child abuse charges, authorities reported Friday.
According to a Michigan State Police reports, troopers initiated a traffic stop along I-94 near Marshall on July 27. After observing indicators of criminal behavior, officers attempted to initiate a consent search when the male driver of the vehicle fled, along with a female occupant and two small children who were unrestrained in the car.
The vehicle was later found involved in a single vehicle crash on Old U.S. 27, north of I-94. When troopers arrived to the scene of the crash, all of the occupants were missing from the vehicle, and 22 pounds of cocaine was found outside of the vehicle scattered from the crash. Officers and troopers from the Marshall Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshall Post, and the Paw Paw Post converged on the scene to assist with the apprehension of the two adults, who fled with the young children. An MSP K9 team from the Marshall Post was deployed.
The K9 team was able to locate the 27-year-old male driver, Daquane Wilson of New York, New York, hidden in an outbuilding with an infant child. Troopers also located 22-year-old Jadzia Cobeo of New York, New York, hiding in waist high swamp water, holding a toddler. The third subject, 50-year-old Nedra Thompson of New York, New York, was lodged as well.
Wilson and Cobeo were arraigned July 28 on charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, possession with intent to deliver over 1,000 grams of cocaine, and child abuse fourth degree. Thompson was arraigned July 28 on charges of possession with intent to deliver over 1,000 grams of cocaine and uttering and publishing counterfeit United States currency. The arrested persons face up to life in prison and/or a $1 million fine if found guilty of the cocaine trafficking charges.
Detective Lieutenant Blanksvard of the Southwest Enforcement Team (SWET) estimated the street
value of the cocaine seized to be approximately $985,000, where cocaine is sold by the gram.
Marshall Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshall Post, and the Paw Paw Post assisted with the apprehension of the suspects.
