Congressman Fred Upton has sent a letter to the chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee asking for a hearing on the use of oil released this year from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Upton tells WSJM News the Biden administration has released oil from the strategic reserve to fight high gas prices.
“I hope that we don’t learn some of that oil is not going to help domestic users here in the United States, whether it be truckers or regular consumers like us,” Upton said. “There’s a fear that some of it is actually being diverted to China, versus protecting U.S. interests here.”
Upton says there have been reports millions of barrels have been sent to China. He says the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve is being depleted at the same time China is building its reserve, something Congress should review. He and colleagues want officials from the U.S. Department of Energy to testify on the use of the oil released from the reserve. Upton joined Congressman Markwayne Mullin in sending the letter.
