Indiana Michigan Power has announced $23,000 in grants for robotics teams at schools around the two states. In Berrien County, the Buchanan High School MegaHurtz Robotics, the Lakeshore Lance-A-Bots, and the St. Joseph Average Joes are all receiving grants. I&M spokesperson Schnee Doyle tells WSJM News robotics fits in with I&M’s mission.

“The program itself challenges students of all ages to be creative, stretch their skills when it comes to science, math, and technology, and to explore other STEM careers,” Doyle said.

The grants range between $250 and $6,000. They’ll go right into the bots the kids build.

“The grants are for FIRST competitions, and so those are your high tech spectator sporting events that demonstrate the student’s success when it comes to brainstorming, teamwork, and meeting deadlines.”

Doyle says the I&M For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology robotics grants program is a nationwide initiative supporting pre-kindergarten through grade 12 student education with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM. Across its entire area, I&M parent AEP has donated $200,000 in 11 states to robotics teams.
