The 9th Annual Freep Film Fest kicks off Wednesday night. Executive director and festival co-founder Stevey Byrne told Michigan News Network this week one of the featured films is “Bad Axe,” which premiered at the South by Southwest Festival.

“It won the audience award for documentary there, it just got picked up for national theatrical distribution, and it’s set in the Michigan Thumb town of Bad Axe,” Byrne said. “It follows an Asian American family who runs a restaurant in town and some of the difficulties they had both during the pandemic and the social uprisings of 2020.”

Byrne says the festival will open Wednesday night with “Gradually,” then “Suddenly – the Bankruptcy of Detroit.” He says a new feature this year is their film & food series with food related movies showing at Frame Restaurant in Hazel Park. The film festival runs through May 1st.
