Congressman Fred Upton has introduced legislation intended to help Ukrainian refugees and also punish Russian oligarchs for that country’s war on Ukraine. He tells WSJM News the Ukrainian Sovereignty Act is yet another way to sanction Russia.

“This is legislation that will allow Ukrainians to be able to sue for [Russian] assets that are held in the United States in U.S. courts,” Upton said. “It’s been done before, and will hopefully send some signals to the wealthy in Russia that their assets aren’t so protected here in the United States if they’re here.”

Upton says this was previously done with Iran. With hundreds of millions of Russian assets in the U.S. he says this would punish the Russian elite. Upton met with Ukrainian lawmakers this week and learned more of the personal devastation citizens of that country have suffered. Upton introduced the bill with co-sponsor Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.
