AAA has advice for international travelers during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. AAA of Michigan’s Adrienne Woodland told Michigan News Network international travelers should closely monitor news reports, work with a travel advisor, and buy travel insurance although most policies have exclusions related to war.

“One other thing we are recommending for travelers who are planning to go abroad is American travelers should enroll in the Department of State’s SMART Traveler Enrollment Program, also known as STEP,” Woodland said. “STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy to contact you in an emergency.”

Woodland does say that popular destinations like Rome, Paris, and London are more than a thousand miles from Russia and Ukraine. They are open to American travelers.
