Some of Michigan’s waterways are about to get some financial support. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has received a one-time $1 billion investment from the federal infrastructure package. It’s the single-largest investment in the Great Lakes’ history. Senator Gary Peters told Michigan News Network the additional funds would help speed up much-needed cleaning efforts.

“Areas around greater Detroit have been used by industry for years and years, and oftentimes, industry prior to environmental laws dumped very toxic chemicals into the rivers, into the lakes,” Peters said.

Peters says there are nine areas of concern here in Michigan. They include nearby rivers that drain into the lakes. The one billion dollar investment is in addition to the annual funding approved by Congress for the program.
