Using your phone behind the wheel could soon land you in some trouble. The Michigan House has passed a bipartisan package of bills that aim to curb distracted driving. Lawmakers voted after hearing arguments for and against legislation that would update Michigan’s texting and driving law, banning the use of handheld devices that aren’t mounted to the vehicle except in an emergency. State Representative Mari Manoogian introduced the bills.
“These bills together create a law that is enforceable by our police and highway patrol and set the stage for us to change the culture of distracted driving in our state,” Manoogian said. “We are looking to encourage folks in our state to use hands free options that are available to them for their safetyand the safety of others.”
The bills passed 75 to 26 and will head to the Michigan Senate. Representative Joe Bellino, a Republican from Monroe, says the bi-partisan effort would prohibit driving while accessing, reading or posting to a social media site.
