Some Afghan refugees will move onto the campus of Eastern Michigan University Friday. The university is working with Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County to host about a dozen refugee families in campus apartments, according to Eastern Michigan University president Jim Smith, who spoke with Michigan News  Network.

“We certainly will lean on Jewish Family Services to help us with the overall relocation process, but I’m very proud of our student government,” Smith said. “They’ve stepped forward and said ‘We want to be engaged and we want to meet the families.'”

Smith says faculty wants to help the families as well. He says there have only been a couple of complaints about accepting the refugees, but he says EMU is a welcoming community.
