The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says a Chicago man was taken into custody following a chase on I-94 with police early Wednesday. It all started around 12:45 am. when several Indiana police units were in pursuit of a stolen white box truck that was heading east on I-94 into Michigan. A couple of Berrien County Sheriff’s deputies joined the chase as it passed the New Buffalo Welcome Center. Indiana police used stop sticks, deflating the stolen vehicle’s tires, and it came to a stop near exit 4. The driver tried to run, but he was caught by a police K9 from Indiana. After a struggle, police got the man into custody. He was first taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland to be treated for dog bites and for a blood alcohol test. He was then taken to the Berrien County Jail. The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Sergio Covarrubias.
