One of Metro Detroit’s athletes who just competed in the Tokyo Olympics, swimmer Allison Schmitt of Canton won a silver and a bronze medal. She won a bronze in the 4 by 100 meter freestyle relay and a silver in the 4 by 200 meter freestyle relay. That’s two of ten medals she’s won over four Olympics. Schmitt spoke with Michigan News Network this week.

“It was the silver medal,” Schmitt said. “I know that we always want gold, but I think that one was one of the most special moments because all 12 athletes that were on the podium were in a world record pace.”

With the pandemic, Schmitt says it was a different experience , but says she felt safe in Tokyo. At 31, she’s not sure if she’ll compete in the next Olympics, but says she will complete her masters degree in social work at Arizona State University.
